    The Kevin Healey Story

Feb 17, 2007 by Jon Jarc
Kevin Healey, an 18 year old freshman at the University of Notre Dame and a 2007 graduate of St. Ignatius High School in Cleveland , Ohio , has never been content to stand on the sidelines. He began his battle against a form of osteosarcoma in his right tibia, discovered in December of 2006. He underwent months of chemo and a total knee/tibia replacement and tumor removal surgery last May. The tumor pathology revealed a unique cancer unknown internationally. The doctors took their best guess as to how to treat this rare cancer and Kevin underwent months of his former and additional chemo treatments. Unfortunately, Kevin's body was resistant to chemo, and a January 2008 lung scan/surgery revealed that cancer has metastasized to his lungs. The doctors removed the lesion. They will scan him again at the end of February. Kevin returned to ND ten days after the surgery.

During all of this, Kevin was a Notre Dame early admission student who turned down admission to Harvard. Despite missing about 1/3 of his first semester at ND due to chemo, Kevin made the Dean's List. He is the son of Tom Healey, ND '81, a theology teacher at St. Ignatius High School , and Ann, a Kindergarten teacher at St. Bernadette School . Kevin's sister, Mary Kate, is a 7th grader at St. Angela Merici School.

Kevin’s most likely next course of treatment will include experimental drugs which are very costly and one is not covered by insurance ($15,000/month). And at some point soon, his insurance will potentially cap out. And, God willing, there will come a time when Kevin needs expensive health insurance when he is in graduate/law school and beyond.

The Healey family is profoundly grateful for your support.
Kevin's growing sense of Jesus active in his life, already present before his illness, is the center of his life. Aware that God has a special plan for him, he is eager to discern how to best serve God in his life as he faces the battle of his cancer.

Throughout his four years at St. Ignatius, Kevin was active in a number of extracurricular activities including performing in the marching and concert band. His love of playing liturgical music and singing in the chorus extended his musical talents. In Magnificat's production of "Fiddler on the Roof" this fall, Kevin played the part of the Rabbi. “Never sitting on the sidelines” also drew him into being a co-editor-in-chief of the yearbook, a co-president of Junior Council on World Affairs and a member of the Student Senate.

As a "Man for Others" he reached out to help others through service projects such as the Labre Ministry to the homeless and the St. Joseph of Arimathea Society where he offered himself as a pallbearer to those who had no one to carry them into church for their funeral. The elderly looked forward to his visits as well as the young children whom he visited through school sponsored events. His service to others was maximized as he answered the call to be a Eucharistic Minister.

As an honor student, Kevin was accepted as an early admission candidate to the University of Notre Dame as well as several other universities. He has always dreamed of attending Notre Dame, a school he loves and plans on taking by storm when he arrives there as a student. If attending Notre Dame this fall is put on hold, Kevin knows his family and friends are supporting him through every step.

Kevin's dad, Tom, currently teaching at St. Ignatius High School, has touched numerous young men's lives throughout his 26 years at St. Ignatius. As the news of Kevin's journey spreads throughout the community, it can be heard again and again, "Mr. Healey's son! He was my favorite teacher!"

Kevin's mother, Ann, is a Kindergarten teacher at St. Bernadette School in Westlake. She, too, has placed a beautiful imprint on the little children getting them off to a good start. His sister Mary Kate is a 6th grade student at St. Angela Merici School in Fairview Park. He also has a special friend which is his chocolate lab, Murphy. Murphy cannot understand that he can no longer jump up on the bed to lie with Kevin; but, neverless, he is never far from Kevin's bedside.

Every challenge Kevin met in life thus far, he faced with family and friends at his side for his family and friends love him with all their hearts. So many people whose lives have been touched by the Healey's are pulling for him. Kevin thanks everyone for the support, and above all, the prayers offered for him and his family as they face this challenge together with God at their side.

Hey Kevin, its Gabe Rossi. I know we never really had many classes together and we were never really close, but i still want to let you know that you have touched my life through your constant battle and your will to keep fighting. You give everyone who has heard your story inspiration and hope to keep fighting and to never take anything for granted.
I believe the only class we had together was freshman year theology with your dad as our teacher. I remember many of the things he taught us, but especially a few things very relevant. He told us about how we would find friends that will last a life time at Ignatius, and how we will see first hand how strong a sense of community can go. I believe this is true in both cases, especially for you, as I see the community, with special recognition to your best friends, work as hard as they can to continue to support you in your fight, and how the Ignatius community has come together for you and your family with support financially and spiritually. You have changed my life forever probably without you ever knowing it.
I apologize for not being able to make it to your party tonight, i hope you had the time of your life. Best of luck with your battle. If you need anything please let me know. I will continue to pray to John Paul the Great for you and your family. God Bless You.

I swear, every touchdown was made by Dante. He would no sooner get the ball and run for an 87 yard td. Amazing!! I know he is looking forward to playing for Cardinal Mooney. He also too has the support of his community behind him too. A group of kids got together and are having a "Mile of Hope Walk" August 18th. Also, they were humble enough to know that His plan is beyond their meager human understanding. You, too, are being called to trust with great faith where you do not understand. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam, and the mountains quake with their surging.
There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High Dwells.
    God is within her, she will not fall;

Eighteen years ago we witnessed a healing miracle for our son Kent for whom no cure could be found for terminal stages of nephrotic syndrome, a rare kidney disease. After intense prayer and relinquishing him body and soul to Jesus's care, he literally "peed off" 14 pounds of fluid that had accumulated in his little 6 month old body. The wonderful pediatric nephrologist declared there was no medical explanation for this occurrence.
We thank God everyday for sparing his life. We will be praying that your parents are likewise blessed....and know you will be a living example of God's mercy and grace.

Even though you probably already know it, you have brought the church community together to pray for you. In doing so, you have greatly strengthened it. We will always have hope. Never let hope part from you. I had to do a report on the meaning of Jeremiah, chapter one, for theology (mr baron). It reminded me that no matter what happens to us, God will be there for you, even if you feel dispair. Remember that Jesus, God Himself, died for you and me and that he loves you. Rejoice because of this, and let nothing else bother or affect you. In the words of mr baron, peace and love!

Lewis and learned about you through petitions we say for you each Tuesday morning. I have been praying for you and your family ever since. I lit a candle for you today in St. Mary's Chapel. Cancer has touched my family, taking two sisters-in-law (breast) and my father-in-law (colon). I am actively involved with Relay for Life in Brunswick, Ohio. You are so strong and such an inspiration to me that I had to write to you. If you would offer some advice to help me to convince my 46 year-old husband to get a colonoscopy, I would be so grateful. I will pray the Novena Prayer for the Canonization of Pope John Paul II as requested by your dad. I did a Lenten Reflection this evening at my parish, St. Ambrose, and wanted to close with this phrase from the first chapter of the Gospel of John, "Behold, the Lamb of God."

How interesting that your current update should happen to occur on my brother Bob's 2nd birthday in heaven. He was born April 6,1963 and joined God on March 4,2008. The last few months as I have followed your journey, I have been having a terrible time coping with the loss of my dear brother-instead of time healing, I feel like I've been in a time warp. I am trying to feed off your courage, hope for the future & incredible faith. This is not easy for me, as I feel somewhat betrayed by the priest at my own parish for his reprehensible behavior toward my family when my brother was in need of last rites. I have been praying to forgive him for over a year, but it's very hard because I can't justify what he did & I feel hurt on behalf of my brother as well. Your incredible faith is the only thing that has kept me hanging on to mine & not deserting Catholicism or the parish, as many from our parish have due to this priest. I know he is only human, but I made the mistake of holding him to a higher standard because I thought he was supposed to have taken a vow to represent God & the church. Your family has touched my heart in a way I cannot describe and as with all things, I believe God brings people into our lives for a purpose. I will continue to hold you all close in prayer, especially as we approach Good Friday- I pray that the scans will show the power of prayer, when it is God's will,
and that Kevin will show improvement.
You have all shown such overwhelming love & courage & I have felt it in my heart and been inspired . God Bless you all .

You might not even remember that we were in band together, but we did meet and talk a few times. I can't remember what it was about, but that was enough. It has changed the way I think, and if you have brought some change in me, so I can only imagine the influence your presence has brought upon people who have been able to spend more time with you. I believe that God is revealed through the actions of people who do His work, so I believe you have brought God to those around you. I hope you can find some comfort in this image, that those you have touched through your presence have seen an image of God.

    Please accept my prayers.

I learned of Kevin's story through his Aunt Julie, whom I work with here in Michigan. It has touched me in so many ways. As a parent, I truly feel the heartbreak that Ann and Tom are going through. Parents aren't supposed to outlive their children.
As a veterinarian who treats cancer, I have followed with clinical interest and the knowing of medical realities.
As someone who lost their mother to cancer years ago, I have the memories of her battles, rallies, and ultimate loss. I also remember, though, how she found comfort in Jesus in that last year.
As the husband to a hospice nurse, I know how important it is to have the whole family understand what is happening and have them supported as much as the patient.
As a friend and coworker of your Aunt Julie, I know how much she loves you and doesn't want to see you in pain.
And, finally, as someone who will most likely never meet you face to face, but will be forever changed by your story. I have recently come to realize that there are Angels among us. God puts them here to teach us. For some, their mission is long. For others, their mission may be short, but their lessons are not any less valuable. And, when their mission is done, God will call them back.
Kevin, may the blessings of this Easter come to you in full in thanks for the example of a life well-lived.

A friend at work told me about Kevin and sent me the link to this site…and I have been on this site daily. I have since told my parents, all of my siblings, all of my nieces/nephews, etc. We are all addicted to your family!

I don't think I can express my feelings of inspiration. I, being one of 8 children, come from a very strong Catholic family, but can't even tell you how much your family has brought me even closer to my Faith. I thought I was strong before, but you have brought me to a complete different level of my Faith and my relationship with Christ! It sounds crazy, but I feel like a new person…all because of how awesome your family is!!!!

How lucky are we to be Catholic?! Your son is in Heaven with all of our beautiful Angels, and Saints, and our Beautiful Mother and Jesus and GOD! This is our ultimate goal, and Kevin has achieved that goal! Kids that age don't do the things Kevin did! He WAS A TRUE INSPIRATION!!! I honestly think that Kevin was put on this earth for a reason, and that reason was to get people back into their Faith. I read these entries from people, and every one of them have been inspired by your son and your family! Our Churches here in Cleveland will be packed because of you!!!!

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!!!! May God Bless you even more than He has! How very lucky are you to have your Faith! It takes some people their whole lives to achieve the level of Faith that Kevin and your family has in such a short period of time!

    Take Care!
